This is a fun and funny mystery, narrated from a canine point of view, written for adults (PG-13) with a love of animals and their special quirks.
What if you only had days to solve a murder and catch the killer, or face a lifetime in prison? That's a tough enough task for any man, but even harder if you're a dog.
After a few tough years, Taser finally has a safe home and a loving master in an upscale Scottsdale, Arizona neighborhood. When a woman is murdered on his street, this Black Labrador suddenly faces the loss of everything he's struggled a lifetime to gain. Taser must find the killer or return to the harsh world of the county dog pound. He's aided by his buddy, Meatloaf, and a colorful pack of neighborhood dogs. They struggle with their limited human vocabulary and their fractured knowledge of the world. Other obstacles include new alpha dog rivals, old deadly enemies, and a menacing coyote population from the adjacent Arizona desert. In the end, Taser must decide how much he will risk to save his world.

Owing to its claimed sexual content & violence its target audience is for age 13 - adults. So, as an avid reader of adventure stories & mysteries (and a fan of the "Chet & Bernie" books), I thought I'd give this a try.I found the plot interesting, but thin; the dogs' mental & physical abilities absurd & the human characters unbelievably stupid. This is a very disappointing read.
This is not a dog story for adults, perhaps not even for YAs. I won't purchase another & cannot recommend it for anyone. Don't waste your time or money.

A Howl in the Night (Audible Audio Edition) J K Brandon Anthony Reece Jerry Brandon Books Reviews
Before I go on to rave about JK Brandon's Howl series, let me put on my SPCA cap... why don't these people spay and neuter their dogs!? They could save $25 a year on county license fees if the dog is altered, and it reduces the risk of cancer, as well as ensuring that no more puppies end up in the Scottsdale shelter! And why hasn't Robert figured out a way to secure his gate? Every time Taser gets out, he is at risk of getting hit by a car or some other misfortune... not that he needs any help to get into trouble. And for goodness sakes, Robert, get those dogs microchipped! Meat should not have to swallow and regurgitate dog tags to get the two of them home!
Okay, that said, I thoroughly enjoy these books (I've gone through all them so far). It's a fast read, and a compelling mystery, and Taser and his friends are fun to hang out with.
I started reading this book and was a bit confused, not realizing that the speaker was a dog. Once I realized it , it all made sense, and OMG, there we're more than a few parts where I laughed out loud. If you ever wanted to know why dogs jumped and get so excited when someone suggested a walk, well obviously, they want to reinforce the walking behavior in their people, so they will continue to do it. Thanks, Taser for making this clear.
Taser is a dog intent on finding out who killed a neighbor, and this book is the story of that endeavor. This is not a children's book like a Wishbone sort of book, and there are parts that are definitely not for children (there is a children's version of this book) but it has a light humor nicely place throughout the book that makes it so enjoyable.
If You like mysteries and like dogs, especially labs, then this is a must read. I hope Taser has a followed mystery for us to enjoy.
It's not like we don't know our dogs are secretly ruling us, but J.K. Brandon is here to show us just how sneaky they can be. Adoptive-brother Black Labs Taser and Meatloaf care for their latest human, Robert. He's kind to them, remembers to feed them, and takes them to the park where there are plenty of other dogs to associate with. After some of the humans they've had, this is a pretty good setup for both of them. When a neighbor's human is found dead, however, Taser gets it in his head that his own humans won't be happy until the murder is solved. Therefore he sets out, in his own doggy way, to do just that.
This novel is a lot of fun - viewing humans from a dog's perspective is entertaining in itself, but to see those dogs attempt to tackle human problems to keep their world from changing, that is unique. Taser, who is telling the story, and Meatloaf are both loveable Labs and their human Robert should be commended for how well he treats them. I love Meatloaf's specism rants and the cast of characters is well-rounded with a number of other dogs in the neighborhood. The backstories provided serve the story well as their adventure plays out.
My brother, who is an avid reader, told me about the Taser and Meatloaf books by JK Brandon. I was doubtful at first but have enjoyed every moment that I have read them. The nice thing is there are 9 books in this series right now and I have read 4 books so far and I am looking forward to each new book. The stories of 2 dogs and their life happenings is so refreshing. Their detective skills along with the interaction with the rest of the "pack" in the neighborhood is amusing. They have their own language and share with each other things they have learned from TV or their Masters. Sometimes it makes me laugh and sometimes the stories makes me feel sad. I nice little roller coaster of reading pleasure. Light reading which is something I need from time to time. Thanks JK Brandon for sharing these stories. Very delightful.
I really enjoyed this book. I have read others written from a dog viewpoint, but this one gets it right. There is mystery, danger, humor, tragedy, plot twists and an interesting cast of characters - everything you want in a good book. Of course the main characters are dogs, and the author has a gift for showing things from a canine point of view. Each dog has its own personality and set of talents, all interesting and believable. In this first episode, the overachieving black lab Taser is introduced as the alpha dog of the local pack. His owner's roommate wants to sell the house and leave after the murder of a neighbor. Taser is afraid of being sent back to the pound, as that is what happened when his previous human had to move. The dogs, led by Taser and his buddy Meatloaf, use their canine senses and pack cooperation to overcome their limitations to help each other and solve the crime.
Owing to its claimed sexual content & violence its target audience is for age 13 - adults. So, as an avid reader of adventure stories & mysteries (and a fan of the "Chet & Bernie" books), I thought I'd give this a try.
I found the plot interesting, but thin; the dogs' mental & physical abilities absurd & the human characters unbelievably stupid. This is a very disappointing read.
