The rural and deceptively monotonous lives of four generations of two families from 1933 through the 1950's, woven together by marriages, love, illness, lies and hope are vividly presented in this riveting first novel where revolving first-person narratives carry the story along. In a world of surprises and deceit, law-breaking and religious fervor, a beloved mountain holds center stage and provides security and peace. The Natural world, especially apples, plays important roles throughout, whether as apple moonshine, a rotten apple of a son, or mountain orchards that offer shade and sanctuary. Simmons has selected historical and cultural details of Franklin County, Virginia, and stories and characters that weave as intricate a microcosm of the larger society, as do the Fiddle Spiders that bring huge changes to the residents of Cahas Mountain. Rhodessa Rose and her kin will live on in your heart.
Elizabeth "Ibby" T. Greer, author of "Moonshine Corner, Keys to Rocky Mount" and widow of T. Keister Greer, Esq., author of "The Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935."

I loved this book! From the very beginning I was entranced by the characters and felt an emotional attachment to each of them. My heart ached as I read each page, knowing there are people who live and have lived this very existence. It was beautifully written and I am hoping Linda is busy writing another book. I would definitely be on the waiting list.Product details

Cahas Mountain edition by Linda Simmons Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
My family has deep ancestral roots here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A long lost diary of a beloved uncle, recently unearthed in a neglected attic, has rekindled my interest in the history and beauty of Virginia’s rich past. Through this lense, I scanned the back cover of Linda Kay Simmons book “Cahas Mountain” and was instantly intrigued by the description of Rhodessa Rose and her life, loves, and struggles. This book did not disappoint. However, this novel is not only for those with a penchant for rich Southern story telling. Simmons has written an imaginative and thoughtful description of life during Prohibition and WWII that speaks to the treatment of women during this time period. In particular I’ve found myself especially drawn back to the haunting poems included as a kind of epilogue in the back of the book. Simmons has created nuanced and complex characters who you will continue to think about long after you’ve finished the last page.
Now and again you read a novel that seems ripped from the pages of your own life. Such is the case of Linda Simmon's "Cahas
Mountain." The story takes place in the Appalachian Mountains of SW Virginia, an area I grew up in. Its the story of Rhodesa
Rose and her young marriage to Willard. Willard is a rambler, a gambler and a problem when he's drunk on moonshine. I had an
uncle like Willard, wounded in vicious knife fight in World War II, he became an alcoholic and was as mean as a snake. Us kids
were scared to death of him. He wound up killing his wife and went to prison. Like Willard, my uncle also went to prison. The
characters and dialogue in Cahas Mountain have a ring of truth,
Although sometimes overlooked, particularly by those outside the region, Appalachian literature is very important to anyone who wants to understand the culture and values of the region. Those who read Cahas Mountain will be impressed by the high quality of the writing. Appalachian authors like Linda Simmonss use their own experiences in their writing, and thus have given us a unique glimpse into what life was like in Appalachia during the 1930s and 50s. Much of what she writes accurately captures life in Appalachia.
Southern novels like Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying use multiple narrators, as does Cahas Mountain, but Faulkner's Deep South settings were a world apart from Simmon's Cahas Mountain. I highly reccommend this novel, it provides a rare glimpse into dark side of growing up twisted in shadow of this chaos in the mountains.
Great book. Did not want to put it down once I started reading.

The book is an absorbing window into Applachian life during WW II. It has spiritual elements, a baby, intrigue, tension and prison life. It will haunt you for a long time after it is finished.
