What happens when we're confronted with a question for which there isn't an easy answer, just an easy excuse for not answering? When 24-year-old Toronto Patterson is executed in the summer of 2002 for a triple homicide committed at age 17, an obscure writer is asked by his would-be agent to write a book about him. Armed only with a recorder, case files, and a curiosity spawned by urgency, Mosely Braun steps off the plane in Dallas and into a perilous journey that hurls his own life in harm's way. Through it all, Mose undergoes a mythic transformation from doubt to belief, and from observation to action that is at once deeply spiritual and profoundly universal. Based on the true life and trial of Toronto Patterson, the last juvenile offender executed in the state of Texas before the Supreme Court's landmark Roper v. Simmons decision in 2005, Make Me Believe is an astonishing story of what happens when our pursuit of convenient justice runs roughshod over inconvenient facts. Using actual interviews with the accused, case documents, news articles and courtroom testimony, the novel blends fact and fiction to render a compassionate meditation on the power of conviction.

Make Me Believe is the kind of "fiction based on a true story" novel that has you guessing the entire read what is real and what is fiction. The plot is so intense that it often seems that such a story could not be imagined; it must be real. Dax-Devlon Ross immerses you, the reader as a detective right alongside Mosely Braun (the protagonist), unraveling this story and dodging danger. The story ends somewhat abruptly with a lot of questions unanswered. Some could argue that this leaves the ending anti-climactic, but in truth, Dax-Devlon Ross accomplishes a unique goal. Patterson, "the last juvenile offender executed in the state of Texas before the Supreme Court's landmark Roper v. Simmons decision in 2005," had no closure to his plight, so why should you, the reader? When you close the cover to this book for the final time, you will have moral and ethical questions swirling in your mind surrounding the value of life, the vulnerability of truth, and the fragility of justice. And some, will leave this read with a call to action. Good read, good story, good cause... I'm a believer.

This book blew me away. I literally could not put it down. What a brilliant way to approach such an important and powerful subject. This really is a book that every American should read. I run a principal's book club at my school and will be making it the first book we read this year. We will most likely also add it to our law class curriculum.
