If you're a Christian, you know how hard it is to find God's will in a crazy, constantly changing world.

You know how hard it is to sort through all the advice and confusing claims among so many books, websites, and blogs available today. Most popular books on God's will emphasize the Christian life inside the four walls of the church where most of today's Christians spend only a small portion of their time.

Based on a passage from Paul's second letter to Timothy, author Tom Mayhew shares four fresh and unique perspectives of God's will that can help Christians live a victorious life in today's world. "God's Will for the Rest of Us" shows how--and why--God challenges each Christian to be a warrior, a runner, a farmer, and a sacrifice.

Tom draws on his education in theology, engineering, and business, and successful careers in the information technology industry and the military to provide insights that apply when we are outside the church building, working at our jobs and living our lives with our families, friends, neighbors, and strangers.

Join Tom as he takes you on a refreshing and exciting journey through the Bible to show how much God has invested in each of us, and how He is working with us each and every moment of every day to shape us for His purpose!

How many of us think that we need to go to Africa, India or some other place of despair to be in God's will? Tom clearly points out that this is not the case, that God is at work in all things and that we are called to join Him in His work as He develops us.

Tom's perspective is one of an everyday layman that God has moved through multiple vocations: infantry soldier, a seminary student, and engineer, software executive, naval officer, and now an author. Throughout his journey Tom asks God "why have you put me here"? As he seeks to understand his calling, he realizes that the trials he faced were given to him in order to build him into the man he is today. The trails and test are God's way of training him (and us).

From Tom's book:
The Marine Corps put out a recruiting poster a few years ago that showed a young recruit grimacing and struggling to make it over a difficult obstacle course. The caption under the photo said, "Pain is the sensation of weakness leaving the body." Compare this to Hebrews 12:11: "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it". The Greek word used here for "trained" is the same word from which we get "gymnasium." Paul is talking about God's "strength training program" for champion Christians.

The training program that God laid out for Tom provided him with the life perspective to write this book... a book "for the rest of us" that have our full time ministry as tent makers ( people with day jobs) that God calls to join him in His work.

This book is an excellent resource for a new Christian as he/she seeks to understand what God's will is for their life. The stories in this book are very practical, and provided me with new perspective on balancing our role as soldier in enemy territory, with the calling to love your neighbor as yourself. I also found God using Tom to explain how our life experience God's training program. A program which develops: peace, forbearance, faithfulness, self-control and all of the fruits of the Spirit. These are not things we are born with.... just as a young man is not born with the ability to shoot a basketball, or run a mile in under 5 minutes.

God Will for the Rest of Us Tom Mayhew 9781439272749 Books Reviews

A wonderful exposition of God's will for my life. There is a study guide planned and I can't wait to buy it. Thank you, Tom Mayhew.
I just finished reading God's Will for the Rest of Us by author Tom Mayhew and let me say I consider this the finest book that I have read on the subject of knowing and understanding God's Will. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they are a Christ follower (Christian) or not. What I really love about the book is that it shows the relevance of the Bible (God's Word) to our own personal modern day experiences and how much the Lord cares about each one of us. Tom's passion about knowing God and His Will is woven throughout the pages of this book. Great job Tom...you really ministered to my heart!! I look forward to your next one.
This book is a good read for both Christians and non-Christians alike. It helps explain how God has concern for all of us and how he acts on our lives regardless of how good or bad life might seem. Tom explains these things to the reader in a relevant way that it easy to understand. In this day of "who's right and who's wrong" it is refreshing to be reminded that in God's eyes nobody is left behind.

Whether you are very strong in your faith and attend Church regularly, or if you do not believe that God exists you have something to be gained by this book. It may change how you feel, it might not, or it might even just reaffirm what you already believe.
I grew up in church my father was a Baptist minister, I went to a Christian high school, and I went to Bible college, where everyone expected me to graduate and follow in my father's footsteps. After graduation, I found out God had other plans for my life. However, I struggled with guilt over my decision. What would people, especially my peers, think about me entering the business world and not going into full-time Christian ministry? I wish this book had been published thirty years ago. Mr. Mayhew gives great insight into God's plan for "the rest of us" (you'll have to read the book to see who that includes.) I highly recommend this to any Christian who would like some real insight into living a victorious Christian life. Biblical truths are laid out in a fresh, easy to read manner, complete with real life examples and applications, all based on biblical truths. After being in church my whole life, and hearing this topic hashed and re-hashed, I thought this would be "just another book about God's will." Boy, was I wrong!
Tom has written a book that is a beacon of hope for all of us wanting to clarify why God has us here and what his intentions are for us. I was with Tom as a Cavalry Scout in the mid 70's and knew him to the best shining example of what a Christian should be. He talks the talk and walks the walk. He is one of the finest Christians I have had the pleasure of knowing. This book is a no nonsense approach to living a life as a Christian the way Jesus Christ meant for us to. Tom has lived his words unlike most scholars that have been in academia or behind a pulpit throughout their life and don't have a true understanding of what they are trying to teach. I have read many books on this topic and found Tom's book to be the best by far and a must read for anyone wanting to have the best possible understanding of what God's will for us is.
I personally have wrestled with this topic for many years. It always seems as if I can somewhat see what God's path for me in hindsight. That's not always the case though. Just when I think I have it figured out, I'm confused again. The words Tom wrote helped give me a proper perspective on what has been happening in my life throughout the years. I realize now that I am on the right track and God truly is holding the reigns. What a relief! I feel like the book has pulled up the anchors that have been holding me back and now it's full steam ahead!

Thank you Tom,

Tim Sweemer
